You’re about to start one of life’s most beautiful journeys – welcoming a new life into your family. As a Houston newborn photographer and fellow mom, I’ve had the joy of capturing those first moments for hundreds of families in Houston. But I’ve also seen how easy it is for new parents to stumble when planning their newborn session. So, today, I’m going to discuss five common mistakes that new parents make and how to avoid them, so you can focus on what really matters – soaking up every moment with your little one.

Not Booking in Advance

Picture this: You’re snuggling your newborn, breathing in that heavenly newborn scent, when suddenly you realize – you haven’t booked your newborn session!

]Luxury newborn photographers, especially the ones specializing in those dreamy, sleepy poses, often book up months in advance. Those first few weeks fly by in a blur of midnight feedings and diaper changes, and before you know it, your tiny babe isn’t so tiny anymore.

Pro tip: Reach out to your Houston newborn photographer during your second trimester. Most of us schedule in your due date and keep a spot open around that time. This way, you can cross it off your to-do list and focus on preparing for your little one’s arrival.

Not Contacting Their Photographer Immediately After Delivery

Your baby has arrived, and it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement and adjustments. But don’t forget to let your photographer know! The first two weeks are ideal for newborn photos because your baby is still very sleepy and can easily be posed. Your newborn photographer might also need to adjust their schedule to fit you in. Set a reminder on your phone or ask your partner to send a quick message to schedule the newborn session.

Not Communicating Preferences, Personal Props, and Pets, in Advance

It’s common for new moms to try to manage everything, but clear communication with your photographer is important. If you have a special blanket, want a photo with your pet, or have cultural traditions you’d like to include, share these details in advance. The newborn session is about capturing your family’s unique story, and sharing your ideas helps the photographer plan and make your session special.

Stressing About the Session (Relax and We’ll Take Care of Everything)

I get it. It can be overwhelming to think about getting yourself and your newborn ready for a photoshoot. You might worry about whether the baby will be calm or if you’ll look your best. Remember, newborn photographers are experienced in handling babies safely and making parents feel comfortable. Our studio is set up to be cozy and warm, with everything you need. As a newborn photographer, my goal is to make the experience enjoyable, so you can relax and enjoy the moments with your baby.

Not Doing Anything with Their Images

This last one tugs at my heartstrings. After all the preparation and anticipation, some parents receive their gorgeous gallery… and then don’t do anything with it.

I know how it goes – life with a newborn is busy, and sometimes choosing and ordering prints feels like one task too many. But these images are tangible memories of a fleeting time, a way to hold onto those tiny toes and sleepy smiles long after your baby has outgrown their first onesie.

Don’t let these precious memories live only on your hard drive. Whether it’s a stunning album to flip through on quiet evenings, a gallery wall to brighten your nursery, or even just a few framed prints for grandma, find a way to bring these images into your daily life.

Many photographers (myself included) offer artwork design and installation services to help you choose the perfect way to display your images. Take advantage of this – you’ll be so glad you did when you’re cuddling your not-so-little-one and reliving those early days through your beautiful photos.
