How long is a newborn session? This is a question that I get asked often and honestly, it varies. Every baby is different and I never want to put pressure or constraints on your family. However, most newborn sessions last 1.5-3 hours. We move at the pace of your baby and pay attention to their needs.
When babies are extra sleepy, we are able to move through the newborn session quickly. For babies that need extra feedings, snuggles, and soothing, the session may take a little longer. Having young siblings may also add time to your session. Don’t let any of this overwhelm you though! We have tips for preparing for your newborn session, what to expect, and how to prepare your toddler.
Minimizing Time in the Studio
In order to minimize the time you are in the studio, we have created a flow that keeps things moving without you feeling rushed. Once you arrive at the studio, we set Mom up to relax and get started with hair and makeup. Meanwhile, I will start photographing baby’s individual photos. If there are older siblings, I’ll sometimes start on those photos and/or photos with Dad. Then, once Mom is all set, we move into family portraits.
During your newborn session, I want you to know that it’s 100% okay if we need to take a break to feed, change or soothe baby. It is not an inconvenience. In fact, I expect it to happen. Take your time, give baby a full feed and/or a fresh diaper.
Remember, not every baby is the same. Take these tips and do the best you can. With ten years and hundreds of babies photographed, I am confident you’ll end up with beautiful portraits of your baby to cherish for a lifetime!
