“But what if my baby won’t sleep?”
It’s a question I get from new parents all the time, and a situation I’ve dealt with many, many times over the last 5 years as a newborn photographer. In a average newborn session, we spend 80% of our time soothing, rocking, feeding, and changing diapers and only about 20%  of the time actually producing portraits of your new baby. Each baby has different needs, and our first priority is always a happy, comfortable baby, because happy babies will fall asleep. Every so often we get a newborn into our studio that sleeps the entire time and their session runs very quickly, but this is not typical or expected. Of course the opposite happens sometime too and we get a baby, that despite caring for all their needs, would much rather just be awake.

Little Grace and Wyatt had their twin connection running on high gear the morning of their newborn portraits, because as soon as one fell asleep, the other would wake up. They slept around 10 minutes together during their entire session. However, I am able to work very quickly and captured them easily in those 10 minutes and used their alternating sleeping pattern to focus on their individual portraits while mom fed and rocked their sibling, creating a complete collection of simple, natural images of them both together, apart, and with their parents.

Awake babies. Spit-up. Crying. Cluster feeding. Blow-outs. Rambunctious siblings.
I have dealt with it all and none of it comes as a surprise to a seasoned newborn photographer.
