As I sat down to write the post to show baby Grace’s portrait collection, I began thinking about what grace is. It means unwarranted favor or receiving goodness when you don’t deserve it. As I thought about that definition, I realized that parenthood itself if an expression of never-ending grace. It is grace that gives us these tiny gifts wrapped in receiving blankets anyways. It is grace that keeps our children safe, like when you aren’t watching your 3 year old for a minute and she tries to cut up a watermelon herself (yes, that happened this week). It is grace that makes your child still cling to you will unwavering love even though you just lost your temper with them. It is grace that fills the gap when we aren’t the perfect parent and it is grace that gives us second chances (and third and fourth). So much of parenting in those early years is teaching us how to be patient, understanding, and gentle towards our children so that we can then teach our children the same as they grow older. Then, they can show grace to others who may not deserve it, but they give it anyways, because that’s what grace is after all.
We don’t deserve this little miracles, but they are ours. You will make mistakes. Lots of them probably, but its ok. Do your best and let grace cover the rest.
