As a mom and Houston family photographer, I’ve seen it all when it comes to family photo sessions. Those beautiful moments we capture? They’re the result of a little preparation and a whole lot of love. If you are also planning for family photography session in Houston, TX, here are some tried-and-tested tips to make your next family session smooth and fun.

Make Sure Everyone Is Fed

Imagine this: You’re all dressed up, looking great, and then… your kids start throwing tantrums because they’re hungry. We’ve all been there, right? A hungry child (or even a spouse) can turn a happy photo session into a stressful situation fast. So, here’s what you can do to avoid that:

  • Pack some easy, non-messy snacks. Think cheese sticks, fruit pouches, or granola bars—something that’s quick to eat and won’t make a mess.
  • If possible, schedule your session after a meal. A full belly equals a happy family, and that makes for better family photos.

Don’t forget that even adults get cranky when they’re hungry. So make sure you eat something too!

Prepare Your Kids for the Session

Kids and surprises don’t always mix well. Instead of surprising them with a photo session, it’s better to prepare them in advance. Here’s how you can do it:

  • Build excitement: Talk about the session as if it’s a fun family adventure. Get your kids looking forward to it.
  • Set expectations: Let them know what’s going to happen in a positive way. You could say something like, “We’re going to play games and laugh together while someone takes our picture!”
  • Practice makes perfect: Try having a mini photo shoot at home. Encourage silly faces and have fun with it.

By making the session sound like family fun time, you’re setting up a relaxed atmosphere for natural smiles and genuine laughter.

Keep Electronics Away: Let’s Get Present

Trust me; electronic devices can be a big distraction during a photo session. Here’s how to keep it device-free:

  • Out of sight, out of mind: Leave phones and tablets in the car or tucked away in a bag. If they’re not in sight, they’re less likely to be a distraction.
  • Lead by example: This applies to parents too! If your kids see you without your phone, they’ll be more likely to follow your lead.
  • Embrace the moment: Without screens, you’re free to connect with each other. And that connection is what really reflects in photos.

The best photos capture authentic family moments, and those moments happen when everyone is fully present and engaged with each other.

Go with the Flow and Try to Relax

Family life is beautifully chaotic. Your photo session might be a little chaotic too, and that’s completely okay! Here’s how to handle it:

  • Expect the unexpected: Toddler meltdowns? Baby spit-up? It happens. Just remember that it will pass.
  • Find the funny: If something goes “wrong”, try to laugh it off. These candid moments often turn into the most cherished memories.
  • Trust your photographer: We’ve seen it all, and we know how to turn chaos into something beautiful. So, relax and let the session unfold naturally.

Just Keep Smiling

There’s a saying, “Smile and the world smiles with you.” This is so true during a photo session. Here’s why it’s important to keep smiling:

  • Positive vibes: Your smile sets the tone. When you’re relaxed and happy, your family will follow your lead.
  • Natural expressions: Don’t force a smile. Instead, think about why you love your family, and let that joy naturally show in your expressions.
  • Laughter is contagious: If all else fails, break out your silliest joke. Genuine laughter brings out the best, most heartwarming photos.

Remember, your smile is unique and beautiful. Let it light up the camera and create memories that will last a lifetime.

I’m here as your trusted Houston family photographer to help you create beautiful memories that will stay with you forever.
